MOOCs

A MOOC is a type of online learning course. MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course. MOOCs can have thousands of learners from around the world all following the same online learning course (Massive). MOOCs are free or (Open) to anyone with Internet Access (Online).

After Covid-19, FREE online education offerings for K-12 exploded. MOOC websites, like OpenCulture, offer links to a vast collection of K-12 resources as well as the traditional Massive Open Online Courses from prestigious universities from all over the world.

The EU MOOC Consortium created a comprehensive guide to massive open online courses. There is: Portugal’s NAU, supported by their Foundation for Science and Technology; Austria’s IMOOX – for all levels of online education; Italy’s EduOpen from the Ministry of Education; FutureLearn from the UK and FUN-MOOC for the French speaking world. The College de France, a prestigious research university is funding it’s own extensive collection of online materials. Moreover, the World Bank is funding an expansion of OPEN Educational Libraries.

The College de France

The College de France offers free access to video and/or audio recordings of the majority of courses, conferences and its major events. These are accessible in the Audiovideo section of the website. The College de France also has 8 YouTube channels which include a general overview and seven thematic channels. The seven Thematic YouTube Channels are: history and archeology; physics and chemistry; social sciences; life sciences; letters, language, arts and philosophy; mathematics and computing; and science of the universe. FUN- MOOC

FUN-MOOC is a Public Interest Group (GIP) co-funded by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and member institutions. FUN (France Université Numérique) has 157 active classes in a variety of disciplines. 54 Certificates are offered; most are in areas of medicine or medical care.

EU MOOC Consortium

EU MOOC Consortium created a comprehensive guide to massively open online courses offered by universities from all over the world. Open Culture

Open Culture was founded by Dan Coleman, director and associate dean of Stanford’s Continuing Education Program in 2006. Openculture is a compilation of resources that can be used for personal or professional development. It has six main sections: language lessons; e-Books and Textbooks; audiobooks; online courses; and movies.

For English speakers, Openculture is a valuable source for audiobooks and ebooks. For non-English speaking audiences, this is still a good place to start when one is beginning to assemble K-12 educational resources.
