This website is designed for Haiti School Educators as a software roadmap for teachers new to using computers in education. It is also designed for US Sponsors of computer labs. By understanding how strongly the students need computers in schools, sponsors can better advocate for more money for computers and the Internet. US friends of Haiti’s schools are encouraged to “Get Involved” with supporting this dream for today and tomorrow.

WHY Did Computers4Haiti Begin?

Computers4Haiti began because of a need. In Haiti, in 2012, only 45% of students had access to their own Reading or Math books. By the end of Grade 4, half of the students had left school. Only 20% of the schools had libraries and only 1/2 of those loaned books. Fewer than 20% of Haitian Catholic Schools had any computer access and only 7% had Internet access. In rural schools only 10% had access to a computer and only 2% had Internet. Only 18% of rural schools had access to electric power supplied by the government. WHY Now?

Yes, Haiti suffers from serious criminal gang violence, but private schools are still teaching- mainly in rural areas and urban areas outside the capital city. However, after Covid-19 and with the current civil unrest, keeping students in school past 4th grade remains a serious concern of educators.

What can we do to keep students in school? Offer something new and exciting- like computers! We can offer computer access in standard classes to help build skills in math, language or reading. We can build computer literacy so students are ready for online: higher education classes or skills-based job training. We can teach computer science starting in grammar school, so our students are ready for new technical infrastructure jobs, by the time they finish high school.

Today, after over a decade of partnering, computer labs exist in multiple private K-12 schools. But Haiti still faces a lack of computer teachers, technical infrastructure and curriculum guides to support computer science and computer literacy. This website is a resource guide for educators by providing strategies useful in the classroom as well as the tools needed to support the existing school computer labs.

What Have We Done Together?

We wish to thank the Bishop, the local pastors as well as our US church partners for supporting the efforts to bring laptops to Haiti. As kidnapping for ransom and violent crime continue to be a concern in Haiti, all geography and individual contacts have been scrubbed from this website. No religious affiliations are included. No mention of the logistics of bringing computers to Haiti or the number of computers brought down by this program are included. However, we remain sincerely grateful to our local and overseas partners.

Computers4Haiti works in two areas: physically bringing computers to Haiti and supporting everything related to computers. For the US Partners, this website highlights what benefits accrue when more computers are available to a church school. For Haitian Educators, this website translated into Creole, is a resource guide/a toolkit for school computer labs.
