Computers4Haiti supports a religious district of nearly 150 schools. 70% are rural schools. In 2012, only 10% of Haitian rural schools had access to a computer. In 2024 the great need still exists for not only computers but for technical training and support.
Computers4Haiti helps address these needs by: transporting laptops to Haiti; repairing and upgrading laptops for (and in) Haiti; training educators/students in basic hardware/software; building technical tools; testing new field releases and sourcing online solutions.
With the current instability in Haiti, there has been a flight of talented educators and computer teachers. The goal of this website is to help address the knowledge lost in this talent flight as well as to support the startup of new school computer labs.
What has Computers4 Haiti accomplished:
- Transported large numbers of computers to schools – due to security concerns – no logistics, numbers or locations are included here;
- Provided in-country training on hardware, educational software and more;
- Shared the experiences of US schools, who were leaders in computer training, and what Best Practices they adopted;
- Updated laptops with the latest software releases while in Haiti (and in the US);
- Identified a Computer Science Fundamentals Curriculum guide for grammar school educators – without previous computer science training. An award winning online course;
- Developed Computer-On-A-Stick, a computer without the computer. A portable student environment (with TuxMath, Tux Paint, LibreOffice, Klavaro), that works by itself from a USB and is usable in any Cyber Cafe;
- Wrote training documentation for Major Software Update Release 11-23 in English and Creole;
- Offered practical Educational Strategies for Haitian Educators – new to using Computers for Education;
- Identified Massive Open Online Course resources for K-12 and university;
- Upgraded donated computers with new RAM, batteries and power adapters;
- Developed EdTech Toolkit for Haiti.
