Update Software in the Computer Lab

In 2011, we started bringing laptops to Haiti. These computers became the first school computer labs. Student computers need periodic fixing. In 2014, Computers4Haiti led a team of university students. Together we developed Computer-on-a-Stick. One use of this tool, was to restore student computers to new condition. We used this, in school computer labs, until 2021 to cleanup student computers.

In 2023, two teams worked to develop a software update for the student computers in Haiti, “The Major Software Update 11-23”. Computers4Haiti developed user documentation in English, French and Creole. To address the problem of English language appearing on the Update screens, many detailed color photographs were added to the documentation. Color coded arrows identify where specific actions are needed.

Approximately 15 purple lanyards holding two USBs were in Haiti by January 2024. Pink paint marks the outside of the USB with the Software Update 11-23. The second USB contains user documentation in Creole, English and French. The Second USB is nearly empty and available for teacher uses.

Major Software Update 11-23 was designed to update all the existing in-country computers – and bring the school computer labs back to brand new condition.
 WHY Update Computers?
The updates are technical and very necessary. The Operating System is new. The Applications are updated. The latest security updates are added. Starlink Internet is available in Haiti. The updates enable safe Internet access
 Do I need Internet to run the Update? NO. This Update is ‘standalone’ meaning no Internet is needed.
 Do I need to know English to do this Software Update?
NO! The written instructions are in Creole. But – during “Update 11-23”- your computer screens are in English. To address this- many colored arrows are shown on color photographs to identify the action to take- with detailed instructions in Creole.

 What will my computer look like when I am done?
The computer looks just the same as before the Update. The applications are in French and include: LibreOffice Suite, TuxMath, KGeography and much
more.
 Note: “Major Software Update 11-23” Works on Windows (7, Vista, XP, Home) or Linux (Mint, Ubuntu…etc). This update works on Dell, Hewlett Packard, Toshiba etc. computers. All existing
classroom computers are 64bit computers. If a computer has less than 2GB RAM do NOT run Update 11-23. The computer still runs ALL existing educational programs but just can not access today’s Internet. Still a great computer.

Do not use this update on any Windows 8, 10 or 11 computers. Doing so will damage the computer.
