Teacher Computer/IIAB

Available Today! The Teacher Computer (also known as Internet In A Box, IIAB) is a special computer. The IIAB contains over 500 student literature books written in Creole. It has NINE query based SCIENCE textbooks. This special computer also has Wikipedia in Creole – over 68,300 articles.

While the Teacher Computer can be networked, we are using it standalone. For example, let’s say the teacher decides to use the “Let’s Explore Plants” Textbook. The teacher clicks the Download Button. The book is downloaded in PDF format on the Teacher’s desktop. If the teacher likes the book, he/she can copy the book to the other computers in the computer lab using a USB drive or CD/DVD. Now all the students have access to the Let’s Explore Plants Textbook.

Perhaps the teacher wants to encourage students to conduct research on a topic. The purpose of the research is to write a paper. In the US, students often go to Wikipedia to better understand a topic. What types of articles does Wikipedia-Creole have? The major categories are: literature; medicine; education; economy; science (subcategory: math, physics, chemistry, biology); technology (subcategory: tech, computing); society (subcategory: economics, education, religion, humanities); culture (subcategory: arts, entertainment); history (subcategory history, geography).

For students that have good reading skills in French, there is Wikipedia French! In Wikipedia French there are over 2 million Wikipedia articles!

If a student or teacher is trying to learn English- many English books are available – organized by Levels: I, II, III… and there is a full English Wikipedia.

Note: Once one selects Wikipedia Creole on the Teacher Computer, one needs to keep scrolling past the “please write more articles” section to get to the Wikipedia that looks similar to the French and English versions. This allows one to search by information category.

Online Free Courses, MOOCs

After Covid-19, FREE online education offerings for K-12 broadened. MOOC websites, like OpenCulture, FUN-MOOC, EU MOOC Consortium include these resources. Even traditional universities like The College de France include thematic YouTube channels on: history, physics, chemistry, life sciences, mathematics and more. Click on link MOOCs

One “learn to code” program, CODE.org, won Best-In-Class awards in both 2023 and 2024. Educators chose CODE.org for BEST STEM Award 2024. Code.org is FREE. Code.org has a curriculum guide with lesson plans. Code.org is designed for the computer teacher to learn alongside their students.
